Chapter Nine

Jojo

“I’m supposed to be at school right now,” I tell the medic.

“At the college?” he asks.

“No,” I sigh. “I’m a teacher. At Smith Elementary.”

“Do you know the number?” the other medic asks. “I can call the office and tell them what’s going on.”

Surprised by the offer, I nod and give her what she needs. When she makes the call, the other medic draws my attention away from her. He asks me about the accident, like Luke did. I’m sure it’s just to distract me from what he’s doing, but in all honesty, the slight stinging pains of my lacerations are nothing compared to staring down into the river.

When we arrive at the hospital, I’m wheeled inside and then transferred to a different bed. I thank the medics and they leave me with a nurse. I’m checked over for other bumps and bruises, but nothing is seriously wrong with me. The doctor comes in and asks whether I hit my head during the collision. I cannot give him a definite answer, so he goes through concussion protocol with me. After I’m cleared, he tells me that I’ll probably be sore tomorrow.

I thank him and he leaves to print out my discharge papers. When he comes back, my uncle is right behind him. The concern etched on his features brings tears to my eyes. He says nothing as he steps forward and pulls me into a hug. I welcome it. After a big sigh, he pulls back and grips my shoulders.

“You okay?”

“I am now,” I nod.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“No,” I say softly.

“I guess you need a ride home.”

“Yes, but all of my things are in my car.”

“We can stop by the scrap yard first,” he sighs. “Your car was totaled. But they will have retrieved any personal effects inside.”

I sign my discharge papers and follow my uncle out to his car. Sensing my unwillingness to talk, we are quiet as he drives. He goes into the scrap yard office and retrieves my things that were in my car. My purse, my school satchel, and my cellphone. I thank him and then he heads for my apartment. Before I get out of his car, he reaches over and grabs my wrist.

“Talk to someone,” he says. “Anyone, okay? You’re going to need it.”

“Okay,” I smile.

“Call me if you need anything.”

I promise I will and leave him. Once I get inside, I change out of my school clothes and pull on a comfortable pair of jeans and a fitted flannel. It’s not really cold out, but I’ve been shivering ever since I was pulled from my car.

After putting in for another day off tomorrow, I send a text to my parents, telling them first that I’m fine, but the accident left me without transportation. They call me back almost immediately. I calm their fears and they offer their vehicle until I find another one. I thank them and plan on dinner when they get back home this weekend.

At this point, I’m at a loss.
